The ninth volume of the repertory of early modern regulations of good order (Policeyordnungen), edited by the Danish legal historian Ditlev Tamm, covers the early modern good order regulations of Denmark and the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. Starting with the late 15^th century, the volume chronologically documents around 3300 Danish laws and 3400 good order regulations from the duchies, improving their accessibility with a bilingual (Danish-German) index. The bilingual introductions provide further basic information on the legislative structures in Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein. Since the Danish king was ruler and ‘legislator’ in Schleswig and had to come to terms with the Duke of Holstein to maintain ‘peace and good order’, the resulting comparative perspective yields insights on the legal transfer between a European state and early modern territories of the Old Empire. The particular problems of maintaining order in the Baltic Sea region also receive attention, providing a better understanding of how to achieve political order in the jurisdictions of northern Europe.
