This cross-cutting theme deals with the textuality of law in terms of both its linguistic/discursive and material aspects, with a particular focus on the interactions between the internal structure and the contents of a text. Various research projects investigate these questions comparatively on the basis of different groups of sources. For Law and Textuality, these include the barbarian law codes of the sixth to ninth centuries, Byzantine canon law of the seventh to ninth centuries, the leges of the ninth century and the law of the Latin Church in the High and Later Middle Ages.
