Seminar: "Law and Textuality": Law as Text – a 'Barbarian' Perspective

The seminar explores a special aspect of research on the legal history of the early Middle Ages: What significance did literarcy and orality have for the codification of the so-called barbarian laws (Leges barbarorum)? After all, these non-Roman legal texts have been interpreted very differently by lawyers, historians and philologists for the last two centuries. In the light of various contradictions and paradoxes of legal historical research it seems reasonable to ask whether a fresh look at the barbarian laws as texts can provide some new insights into this phenomenon.
