In memoriam Michael Stolleis

On 20 July 2023, the day Michael Stolleis (1941–2021) would have turned 82, this volume was published to honour the memory of the long-standing Director of the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History. Drawing from the academic commemoration ceremony held on 24 June 2022, the contributions contained herein shine a light on the many facets of the university professor, prominent jurist and historian Michael Stolleis. Essays by colleagues and contemporaries recall his œuvre in the field of legal history, and friends offer personal recollections to paint a rich portrait of this extraordinary scholar. Last but not least, this volume also contains an interview with Stolleis himself in which he gives an account of his understanding of ‘legal history’, emerging as a life-long narrator of (hi)stories of law.
