The tensions between the predominant notion of archive in Europe and America since the sixteenth century show revealing alternative ways of selecting and preserving common memory that work in parallel. Departing from community archival documents (Charcas / Bolivia, 16th-21th centuries), we explore what these repositories keep, their custodians and the place where they are found. Valuable data provided by anthropologists and historians, who visited some community archives in the north of Potosí and in Oruro, are compared with other documents from different Bolivian repositories, allowing to read through and reflect upon the sagacious development of these communities, as they were confronted with the written rule of the colonial monarchy and later with the independent republican State. There is a discussion on the uses of temporality and on the notions of copying and authenticity that intervene in the transmission and legal use of documents, which have made possible the survival and - at times violent - coexistence of diverse threads of normative knowledge in this scenario.
