Spanish Abstract: Este artículo trata del palio, una banda de lana que rodeaba los hombros y el pecho de quien la usaba, como símbolo de la función de pastoral y de la potestad de gobierno del romano pontífice, los arzobispos y los patriarcas. La insignia indicaba la plenitud de la potestad del papa, mientras que para los arzobispos y patriarcas expresaba la jurisdicción que tenían respecto de las diócesis sufragáneas por participación del poder papal. En la época indiana, la fabricación y entrega del palio se había fijado desde hacía varios siglos. Sin embargo, se tuvieron en cuenta las particularidades del Nuevo Mundo, sus grandes distancias geográficas y la escasez de obispos, que se regularon por medio de dispensas para facilitar la recepción del palio.

English Abstract: This article focuses on the pallium, a symbol of the pastoral function and the power of government of the Roman pontiff, archbishops, and patriarchs. The insignia, a wool band that surrounded shoulders and chest, indicated the fullness of the pope's power. As for the archbishops and patriarchs, it expressed their jurisdiction with respect to the suffragan dioceses through participation of papal power. In Indian times, the manufacture and delivery of the pallium had been established for several centuries. However, dispensations were needed to facilitate the receipt of the pallium, due to great geographical distances and the scarcity of bishops in the New World.
