Spanish Abstract: Los cabildos eclesiásticos fueron una de las corporaciones de clérigos más importantes de la Iglesia católica durante el Antiguo Régimen. Si bien existieron diversos tipos, por su relevancia aquí solo se abordará sobre los cabildos catedralicios en Hispanoamérica y Filipinas. Estos cuerpos tenían funciones de culto, consejo y gobierno, y estaban integrados por dignidades, canónigos, racioneros, beneficiados y capellanes. Sus tamaños podían variar dependiendo de las rentas de cada diócesis y su peso político y social. Teóricamente, los cabildos debían asistir a sus obispos, sin embargo, frecuentemente se enfrentaron con ellos. Gracias a los derechos de patronato, el rey podía proveer sus plazas, hecho que no impidió que se constituyesen en auténticos bastiones de las élites locales. A fin de distinguir las dinámicas y particularidades de estas corporaciones en Indias, primero, se ofrecerá una síntesis de la historia de los cabildos desde su surgimiento hasta la época postridentina. Luego, enfatizará en los aspectos jurídicos y canónicos relativos a su composición, mecanismos de accesos, actos de gobierno y celebración del oficio divino. Finalmente, se ofrecerá una reflexión historiográfica sobre la temática.

English Abstract: The ecclesiastic chapters were one of the most important clerical corporations of the Catholic Church during the Ancien Regime. Although there were different types, due to their relevance, we will only focus here on the cathedral chapters in Hispan America and the Philippines. These bodies had functions of worship, council and government, and were composed of dignitaries, canons, prebendaries, "beneficiados" and chaplains. Their sizes could vary depending on the incomes of each diocese and their political and social weight. Theoretically, the chapters were supposed to assist their bishops, however, they frequently disagreed with them. Thanks to the rights of patronage, the king could provide their seats, but that did not prevent them from becoming bastions of the local elites. In order to distinguish the dynamics and particularities of these corporations in the Indies, first of all, it will offer a synthesis of the history of the cathedral chapters from their origin to the post-Tridentine period. Then, it will emphasize the juridical and canonical aspects related to their composition, mechanisms of access, acts of government and celebration of the divine office. Finally, a historiographical reflection on the subject will be offered.
