JEV – Fellowship for European Administrative History

January 22, 2021

Benjamin Werner has been awarded this year’s JEV-fellowship for European Administrative History. Using a socio-organisational approach, his dissertation seeks to open up a new and innovative perspective on both the role and activities of the municipal social administration in the period between the democratic Weimar Republic and the Nazi dictatorship. This case study has a decidedly administrative-historical focus, and it breaks new ground and emphasises the context of activities. Drawing upon organisation theory, this project offers precise analyses of the organisational framework of the administrative staff in order to better understand the general operating principles of public administration, the implementation of racial ideology and finally the role of the administration in the Nazi state.

Benjamin Werner is affiliated researcher and Doctoral Student at the Hannah Arendt Institute for Totalitarianism Studies, Dresden.
