Scholarship for post-doctoral researchers

(3–6 months)

Our scholarships for post-doctoral researchers are intended to offer you the opportunity of a longer research stay after you have been awarded your PhD in order to continue your research in an international research community and develop new projects in dialogue with our Institute’s researchers and visiting scholars.

Due to the many research stays that had to be postponed in recent months due to corona, the Departments will only award a limited number of scholarships for 2022. You can find the current calls for applications here.

In order to be eligible for a scholarship, your project must relate closely to one of research themes listed in the current call. Your applications needs to be in English and has to be submitted via our online application platform.

The application needs to consist of the following documents:

  • Research proposal (up to 15,000 characters incl. spaces), which shows how the project closely relates to one of the Institute’s research themes (as listed in the call for applications)
  • CV
  • List of publications
  • Names and (postal and email) addresses of two scholars who have agreed to provide references (upon request)
  • Three thematically relevant publications of the last five years (as PDFs)
  • Scan of the completed and signed form ‘Additional Application Details’

Decisions regarding the award of scholarships are made by the Institute’s scholarship committee.

Please note that for legal reasons, we can only award scholarships to post-doctoral researchers who are neither employed by a German institution nor ordinarily resident in Germany.

In exceptional cases, applications for a post-doctoral scholarship can be accepted after the call deadline but need to be submitted via email to stipendium a minimum of four months in advance of the planned research stay. The Institute’s scholarship committee decides on such applications at one of its quarterly sessions (January/April/July/October).
