The Sociology of Law and the Global Transformation of Democracy

This lecture examines the importance of legal-sociological methodologies for explaining some of the most salient constitutional features of contemporary democracies. Addressing recent examples of constitution making in Europe, Africa and Latin America, it offers a macro-sociological account of some primary tendencies in current processes of constitutional formation, such as the rise of powerful judicial bodies, the increasing integration of international human rights law in domestic jurisprudence, and the deepening interaction between national institutions and international norm providers.
