Workshop: Governance Theory and Legal History

The workshop “Governance Theory and Legal History” which will be held at the MPIeR on May 12th and 13th, 2016. We want to discuss whether concepts and models of analysis taken from the governance theory can be fruitful for legal historical research.

The workshop is divided into two parts: On Thursday, May 12th, 2016 at 3 pm we would like to discuss together with Gunnar Folke Schuppert his upcoming book The World of Rules. Eine etwas andere Vermessung der Welt, in particular its theses and the possible consequences for legal historical research. The English translation will be published later during the year 2016 in our series Global Perspectives on Legal History. The original German version which we would like to base our discussion on will be published in our SSRN-series by the end of March 2016.

This part of the workshop will be in German.

On Friday, May 13th, 2016 we would like to analyze the heuristic value of the Governance perspective by looking at particular historical formations. For this we would like to discuss – after an introductory presentation – inputs from the research on Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Early Modern Period as well as the 19th Century.

This part of the workshop will be in English.
