Remigio Márquez practiced surgery in the New Granada Caribbean between 1790 and 1811. He was a pardo and was married to the daughter of a royal accountant. From this period of his life, I will highlight two aspects in particular. First, understanding him as an intermediate member of colonial society: a free man “of all colors,” literate, socially and professionally connected with Spaniards, and a property owner. Second, analyzing the legal disputes in which he was involved to uncover how he articulated arguments concerning property, race, and honor. In other words, how he used these conflicts—not merely to assert his temperament, but to construct and project his identity. This research, like others I have undertaken or plan to pursue, is intended to be transformed into a comic—a format I have found especially effective for communicating university-level historical research both within and beyond academic settings.
