Today, the dominant discourse of understanding the passions, from which historiography draws, is divided between sociology, social psychology and psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis acknowledges that the existential experiences that affect the subject find a pacifying symbolic edge, when they are translated by the words of an Other, authorised to interpret the uneasiness. The status of this Other of knowledge, historically variable, raises questions about the past: what disciplines were authorised as bearers of this passionate knowledge? What devices shaped its regulation? By looking at the domain of moral corrections, we will immerse ourselves in colonial Spanish law (17th-18th century) in order to understand the way in which the passions were performed in the culture of the Catholic order.
