Conference: “Nuevos horizontes en el Estudio del Derecho Indiano - Un balance a partir de la obra de Victor Tau Anzoátegui”

Since its beginnings, in the first decades of the 20th century, the History of Early Modern Law in Spanish-America has become a vivid field of research, called "Historia del Derecho Indiano". Historians and legal historians such as Rafael Altamira, Ricardo Levene, followed by Alfonso García Gallo, Alamiro de Avila Martell and Ricardo Zorraquín Becu - to name but a few - have contributed to the growth of a solid scholarship, dedicated to research on what might be called the History of Law in the Spanish Empire. In the 1980ies and 90ies, the discipline has received important impulses from different schools of legal history, especially in Italy, Spain and Portugal. Consequently, in 1997, Víctor Tau Anzoategui lined out in his book 'Nuevos Horizontes en el Estudio del Derecho Indiano' what might be considered the future challenges of research in this field. In this seminar, scholars from Argentina, Finland, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United States will take a look back on the studies in this field and give a critical assessment of the research on “derecho indiano” of the past decades and its future perspectives.
