Comparing Solórzano from Within

Angela Ballone will present the outcome of the first year of research on the work of the Spanish jurist Juan de Solórzano Pereira (*1575, +1655). The project aims at comparing the second volume of the Disputationes de Indiarum Iure, the Tomus alter de Indiarum Iure, sive de iusta Indiarum Occidentalium gubernatione (published in 1639), with the Política Indiana (published in 1648). In bringing the two treatises into an ideal dialogue, Comparing Solórzano from Within aims at relating Solórzano’s concepts and ideas, his references to legal and customary systems, his ways to approach the novelty of New World challenges, and the language structures of the two texts. The main objective of the seminar is to assess whether there were doctrinal changes (or not) from the Latin treatise to the Spanish one, as well as the political changes taking place within the Spanish Empire and global scenarios, or the on-going negotiation process surrounding the Derecho indiano.

By implementing a multidisciplinary approach integrating the close reading of the texts with digital tools and methodologies, the seminar will present the initial results of Solórzano’s 'translation' from Latin into Spanish and discuss the methodology developed within the Institute, which includes algorithmic analyses of the texts in order to enrich the overview of the two treatises.
