Trials for high treason and conspiracy against the emperor in Byzantium
A lacuna in Byzantine legal (as well as political and social) history is the systematic analysis of trials for high treason and lèse majesté from the sixth to the twelfth century. This project examines these trials in the context of the dynamic field of tension between Roman law and the ‘pragmatic’ exercise of power in order to gain new insights into the development of post-classical Roman law in the Byzantine empire.
