Scholarship for senior researchers

(1-6 Month)

Our scholarships for senior researchers are intended to provide you as an established scholar with the opportunity to pursue your research as a visitor at the Institute and to discuss your findings with members of our international scholarly community and other scholarship holders. The scholarships are intended for experienced researchers who were awarded their PhD more than 10 years ago and who are acknowledged experts in their field.

Due to the many research stays that had to be postponed in recent months due to corona, the Departments will only award a limited number of scholarships for 2022. You can find the current calls for applications here.
In order to be eligible for a scholarship, your project must relate closely to one of research themes listed in the current call. Your applications needs to be in English and has to be submitted via our online application platform.

The application needs to consist of the following documents:

  • Research proposal (up to 15,000 characters incl. spaces), which shows how the project closely relates to one of the Institute’s research themes (as listed in the call for applications)
  • CV
  • List of publications
  • Three thematically relevant publications of the last five years (as PDFs)
  • The name and (postal and email) address of a scholar whom we may contact to request a letter of reference
  • Scan of the completed and signed form ‘Additional Application Details’

Decisions regarding the award of scholarships are made by the Institute’s scholarship committee.

Please note that for legal reasons, we can only award scholarships for senior researchers to scholars who hold a PhD degree and who are neither employed by a German institution nor ordinarily resident in Germany.

In exceptional cases, applications can be accepted after the call deadline but need to be submitted via email to a minimum of four months in advance of the planned research stay. The Institute’s scholarship committee decides on such applications at one of its quarterly sessions (January/April/July/October).
