Unraveling the Orinoco’s “Labyrinth of Languages”: Linguistic Knowledge and Jesuit Missions in the Margins of the Spanish Empire, 1660-1784

My doctoral project is a political history of Jesuit missions in the Orinoco basin (now the borderland between Colombia and Venezuela) through the study of language policies and linguistic knowledge. It analyzes the way Jesuit missions were conceived, planned, and developed in a territory of great linguistic, social, and cultural diversity, which posed multiple and varied challenges to the expansion of the Spanish colonial frontier in northern South America. By proposing an understanding of the largely unstudied genre of linguistic documents as political and normative texts, this project argues that the production and circulation of linguistic knowledge played a central role in these mission towns, both as a means of understanding this marginal region and for defining key criteria for political administration and religious conversion.

Mi proyecto doctoral es una historia política de las misiones jesuitas en la cuenca del Orinoco a partir del estudio de las políticas de la lengua y el conocimiento lingüístico. Analiza la forma en que se concibieron, planearon y desarrollaron las misiones jesuíticas en un territorio de gran diversidad lingüística, social y cultural, que planteaba múltiples y variados desafíos a la expansión de la frontera colonial española en el noreste de América del Sur. Al proponer una comprensión de documentos lingüísticos como textos políticos y normativos, este proyecto argumenta que la producción y circulación de conocimientos lingüísticos desempeñó un papel central en estas misiones, tanto para comprender esta región marginal como para definir criterios claves para la administración política y la conversión religiosa.
