CfA: Max Planck-ASLH Dissertation Prize for European Legal History in Global Perspective

16. April 2024

mpilhlt and the American Society for Legal History (ASLH) are pleased to announce a new dissertation prize: the Max Planck-ASLH Dissertation Prize for European Legal History in Global Perspective

The prize will honour outstanding dissertations on topics in European legal history in global perspective, presented for PhD or JSD degrees awarded in the previous calendar year.  Topics may include European legal interactions with people or places outside Europe, legal processes spanning Europe and other regions of the world, and developments in legal theory closely linked to imperial, transnational or trans-regional trends.

This year's prize, funded by the Max Planck Institute, is open to dissertations submitted for degrees awarded in 2023. Dissertations must be written in English. The award winner will receive a three-month residential fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory in Frankfurt. The fellowship includes a monthly stipend according to the rules of the Institute's Visitors Programme, a round-trip flight to Frankfurt (up to €1,500), and accommodation in an apartment at the Institute ( valued at €700 per month).  The monthly stipend is currently €2,500 for PhD or JSD fellows, plus an additional €100 allowance for compulsory health insurance. The stipend will be offset against other sources of income.  The timing of the stay at the Max Planck Institute is flexible and will be arranged in consultation with the Institute's directors.  Typically the three-month period will take place in the autumn or spring within one or two years of the award date.
