In 19th and early 20th century, the legal systems of Japan, China and the Ottoman Empire underwent huge transformations. The circumstances were similar: Pressed by so-called unequal treaties and internal needs for reform, all three countries set out to re-build their entire legal order on the basis of Western models. In complex processes of transformation, new legal practices emerged.
With this workshop, scholars from the field of Japanese, Chinese and Ottoman legal history will come together for the first time. The workshop aims at creating a communication basis between these three legal histories. We will examine the potential and the limits of comparison as well as methodological and historiographic challenges and we will discuss possible future cooperation.
