Treaties as <i>travaux préparatoires</i>: Conference on the 60th Anniversary of the Treaties of Rome

The conference will examine the relevance of the preparatory works of the Rome Treaties of 1957 for European Union law today. It will bring together historians, EU lawyers and judges. On the first day, historians will analyse the travaux préparatoires with regard to certain key areas of law and policy, such as agriculture and competition; EU lawyers will comment on these papers. On the second day, the negotiations of the Treaties will be situated in the political and legal context of the post-war period and thus in the longue durée of legal history. The conference will be held within the framework of the recently established research field Legal History of the European Union at the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History.
