Colloquium: European Normativity – Global Historical Perspectives

Colloquium

  • Start: Sep 3, 2013
  • End: Sep 4, 2013
  • Location: Max Planck Institute for European Legal History

For a long time Europe considered itself to be the center of the world. Our law, but also that which we deem to be right or wrong, to be good or bad, to be beautiful or ugly, seemed to spread across the entire globe. Our European values – as is still emphazided today – would slowly establish themselves worldwide. This self-conception, however, is increasingly under pressure. Today we not only ask ourselves what excactly constitutes “European values” but also if we really can grasp, with diffusionist pictures such as the ‘dispersion’ of our law, what really happened during the translation of European normativity into other cultural contexts. These questions become even more urgent, the more an emerging world society has to be integrated normatively. Therefore the colloquium will take a look at “Europan Normativity” and its adaption, transformation, alteration in the world.
