Justiz Macht Politik

September 26, 2020

The debate about the succession of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is in full swing in the United States. Party-political polarisation raises fundamental questions about the organisation of the court system and the election of judges. In November 2018, a symposium organised together with the Academy of Sciences and Literature—Mainz focused on the relationship between justice and politics – with contributions from the fields of law, politics, science and journalism. The lectures can be found >here<.

The organisers of the symposium, Dr Jasper Kunstreich and Dr Konrad Duden, also spoke with the ‘Research Quartet’ – a scholarly podcast produced by detektor.fm in cooperation with the Max Planck Society. The following edition "Wie frei sind wir? - Die Grenzen der Freiheit" takes up the issue of judiciary independence and why this is a fundamental prerequisite for a free society.
