How does a modern legal system emerge at the end of the 19th century? The case of Bulgaria reflects developments in Southeast Europe generally. The Principality of Bulgaria was founded in 1878 after five centuries of Ottoman rule, and its constitution as a sovereign state occupied the subsequent decades. A constitution and numerous laws were passed, which were often hybrids of elements from various foreign models. Beyond legislation, jurisprudence, juridical practices, legal media and legal language were also vibrant sites of jurisgenesis. Ever more complex debates on the quality, independence and uniformity of applicable law occurred simultaneously. The analysis is based on copious sources that are largely unknown outside of Bulgaria.
