Seminar: "Law and Textuality": Encyclopaedism and law between the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries

This seminar studies the relationship between Law and Encyclopaedism during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, looking at the distinction between the 'internal' and 'external' points of view. Here, we will focus on the external point of view and try to understand how the encyclopaedists analysed the 'law', and how 'law' (as legal knowledge) became part of these encyclopaedias. The two main currents of sixteenth-century Encyclopaedism (Petrus Ramus and Ramon Llull) are analysed and their reception demonstrated by looking at the works of Alsted, Comenius, Leon de Saint Jean, Ives de Paris, Kircher and Leibniz.
