The School of Salamanca: New Digital Edition of Martín de Azpilcueta’s Manual de Confessores y Penitentes now online

February 22, 2019

The latest publication in the Digital Collection of Sources, edited by the Salamanca project, was a real bestseller of the early modern era: Martín de Azpilcueta’s Manual de Confessores y Penitentes was one of the most influential works of moral theology in the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, not only in Europe but also in the Americas. The full text of this substantial edition (printed in the Salamanca in 1556) is now available online and in open access on the project’s website.

The School of Salamanca. A Digital Collection of Sources and a Dictionary of its Juridical-Political Language is a joint project of the MPIeR, the Goethe University Frankfurt and the Academy of Sciences and Literature, Mainz. We have been working closely together with Manuela Bragagnolo on her Azpilcueta-focussed projects, HyperAzpilcueta and Martín de Azpilcueta’s Manual for Confessors and the Phenomenon of Epitomisation, where the full text—edited by the Salamanca project—will also be used as part of the research into the 'self-translation' processes Azpilcueta's Manual underwent as the result of his often updated editions in various languages (Portuguese, Spanish and Latin).
