Guest lecture: Local arbitration as practised multinormativity? Case studies from a Waldeck Peace Court of 1850.

In the mid-19th century, local arbitration was practised in several German regions to an extent never seen again. The Peace Court of the Principality of Waldeck-Pyrmont (1848-1879) is the only such arbitration institution whose protocol books from that period survive. On the basis of these protocols, the lecture will examine why local arbitration was so popular at the time, and aboce all explore the question to what extent the norms applied in such courts deviated from those of state law.
