Colloquium: Slavery in Spanish scholastic thought

Between 1500 and 1600, Spain and Portugal discovered and subjugated much of the New World, and built a system in which huge numbers of Africans were enslaved, traded, and put to work in the new colonies. Daniel Allemann’s research explores how the Spanish scholastics crafted a theoretical response to these drastic and disturbing developments. The rise of global slavery prompted these theologians – and the jurists who worked alongside them – to rethink the limits of the political in myriad ways, across Old and New Worlds.
