Award for Simon Groth

Dr. Simon Groth was awarded the Promotionspreis der Unterfränkischen Gedenkjahrstiftung für Wissenschaft und der Universität Würzburg for his doctoral thesis ’Karolinger‘ und ‚Ottonen‘ oder das ‚Ostfränkische Reich‘? Herrschaftsfolge und Herrschaftsraum in geschichtswissenschaftlichen Theorien und historiographischen Perspektiven (“‘Carolingians’ and ‘Ottonians’ or the East Franconian Empire? Succession and Space of Rule in Theories of the Humanities and Historiographical Perspectives”). Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Caspar Ehlers, Groth wrote the dissertation between 2011 and 2015 while at the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History and as a fellow of the International Max Planck Research School for Comparative Legal History. It focusses on common models of periodization for the early medieval era, their viability and the consequences of their casual use. The award was presented by the District President of Lower Franconia, Paul Beinhofer, and the University’s President, Prof. Alfred Forchel, on the occasion of Würzburg University’s commemorative gala in the Neubaukirche on 11 May 2016. Of the 20 dissertation awards at the University of Würzburg, only two went to the Faculty of Philosophy, to which Groth submitted his dissertation.
